Branded SMS Sender ID in Pakistan, Explained

Branded SMS Sender ID in Pakistan, Explained

SHORT ANSWER
A sender ID, also called a mask, is the name your customers see instead of a phone number when you send them an SMS. In Pakistan, your own brand mask has to be registered and approved before you can use it. Until then you can send with a generic mask. Branded messages are trusted more, read more and are less likely to be ignored as spam.

You have probably received both kinds of SMS. One shows up from a random number like 8xxx or +92 3xx. The other shows up from a name, like your bank or your favourite store. Which one do you trust more?

That name is the sender ID, or mask. This guide explains what it is, how it works in Pakistan, and when it is worth setting up.

In this guide

  1. What a sender ID or mask is
  2. Why businesses use one
  3. How getting a mask works
  4. Transactional, promotional and OTP messages
  5. Tips for messages people actually read
  6. SMS, WhatsApp or both?

What a sender ID or mask is

When you send an SMS through a normal phone, the receiver sees your number. When a business sends through an SMS platform with masking, the receiver sees a short name instead, usually the brand name.

So instead of a message from an unknown number saying "Your order is confirmed", your customer sees it from YOURBRAND. Same message, very different first impression.

Why businesses use one

  • Trust. People are careful with messages from unknown numbers. Fraud messages have trained them to be. A known name gets opened.
  • Recognition. Every message reminds the customer who you are, even if they do not reply.
  • Clean records. All your business messages come from one name, not from whichever phone someone in your office used.

It also matters for one time passwords and order checks. A customer is far more likely to type in an OTP that arrived from a name they recognise.

How getting a mask works

You do not just pick a name and start sending. In Pakistan, a brand mask has to be registered and approved before it goes live. Your SMS provider handles the request for you, and you will usually need some business documents to show that the name belongs to you.

While your mask is being approved, you can still send messages using a generic mask. Branded SMS Pakistan offers ready generic masks for exactly this, so urgent messages like OTPs do not have to wait.

A few practical things to keep in mind when you choose your mask:

  • Keep it short and close to your brand name. Customers should recognise it at a glance.
  • Avoid names that look like another company. These get rejected and waste time.
  • Use the same name everywhere. Changing masks confuses customers.

Transactional, promotional and OTP messages

Not all SMS are the same, and it helps to know the difference.

  • Transactional messages are things the customer expects: order confirmation, payment received, appointment reminder, account alert.
  • Promotional messages are offers, sales and announcements sent to a list.
  • OTP messages are one time codes for logins, sign ups and order checks. These need to arrive fast, every time. For apps and websites, Branded SMS Pakistan also offers OTP through a short code.

Our honest opinion: start with transactional messages. They are the ones customers actually want, so they build trust in your mask. Promotional messages work better once people already know the name.

Tips for messages people actually read

  • Put the useful part first. "Order #1042 confirmed" before "Thank you for shopping with us".
  • Use the customer's name. Branded SMS Pakistan lets you add each customer's name and details to the message.
  • Do not shout. All capitals and lots of exclamation marks look like spam.
  • Send at sensible times. A promotion at 11pm annoys people. An OTP can go any time.
  • Make it easy to stop. People who want to leave a promotional list should be able to.

SMS, WhatsApp or both?

We get asked this a lot, and the honest answer is that they do different jobs.

SMS reaches every phone, including basic phones and people who are not on WhatsApp or have no data at that moment. That makes it the safer choice for OTPs and urgent alerts that must arrive.

WhatsApp is better for conversations. Customers can reply, send pictures and ask questions, and your team can answer from a shared inbox. It also needs the customer to have WhatsApp and an internet connection.

Many businesses use both: SMS for codes and critical alerts, WhatsApp for updates and support. If you only pick one to start, think about what happens if a message does not arrive. If that would be a real problem, start with SMS.

Questions we get asked

Can I send SMS before my mask is approved?

Yes. You can use a generic mask while your own is registered, then switch once it is approved.

Can I connect SMS to my website or store?

Yes. Branded SMS Pakistan has a Shopify app, a WordPress plugin and an API for custom systems, plus ready connections for tools like Zoho and WHMCS.

Is this only for online stores?

No. Banks use it for alerts, clinics for appointment reminders, ISPs for bill reminders and outage notices, and travel companies for booking updates.
